The Ultimate Guide To The Ninja Foodi Steam Roast

The Ultimate Guide To The Ninja Foodi Steam Roast

Welcome back to another of our ultimate guides for the Ninja Foodi. This week are talking all about Ninja Foodi Steam Roast. A popular function of the Ninja Foodi 15 in 1 and one we feature in both our cooking times guide and Ninja Foodi cookbook. So, what gives? Let’s find out!

The Ultimate Guide To The Ninja Foodi Steam Roast

Ninja Foodi Steam Roast

If you scroll down our Ninja Foodi Functions Guide & Chart you will notice that the Ninja Foodi brand introduced the steam roast setting to the Ninja Foodi 15 in 1, also known as the Ninja Foodi Max. It joined the probe as a new and improved setting.

But is the steam roast worth upgrading for and how does it work? Well, the steam roast function of the Ninja Foodi simply allows you to steam and roast your food at the same time. You create steam infused food whilst also roasting your meals.

People that have tried it absolutely love the steam roast results of the Ninja Foodi, and we also feature it in our 30 days of the Ninja Foodi. Which is a challenge where you cook a different food every day for 30 days to get used to it.

The most popular foods to steam roast in the Ninja Foodi 15 in 1 are typical of Sunday roast dinners you would normally roast for some time in the oven such as:

Ninja Foodi Steam Roast Chicken

To give you an example of what to expect from the steam roast ninja foodi function this is a video that we made of a steam roast chicken using the probe. We recommend having a watch and then you know what to expect!

What Is Steam Roast On Ninja?

The steam roast setting on the Ninja is simply a preset that steams and it roasts at the same time. This creates very tender and juicy meat and poultry whilst because of the roast element creating a crispy skin.

Our personal favourite for ninja air fryer steam roast is cooking a pork with crackling on the setting. The crackling is unbelievably good and you wouldn’t achieve the same juicy centre in the oven or in a standard air fryer.

We also feature the pork with crackling in our new cookbook THE COMPLETE MULTICOOKER COOKBOOK. Below you can see the step-by-step photographs from the ninja foodi book:

In the cookbook we use the steam roast and combine it with the probe to get the amazing results. We also show you in the book how to time it if you don’t want to use the probe.

Steam Roast Vs Steam Air Fry

I will let you in on a little secret…..steam roast and steam air fry are such similar presets that if you don’t have steam roast you can achieve the exact same from steam air fry.

Nobody would ever be able to tell the difference and the same can also be said for steam bake too.

So, if you have a Ninja Speedi and want to achieve the same pork with crackling opt for steam bake or steam air fry.

WHY?  If you notice the Ninja Air Fryer started with a separate roast and bake setting. Then they paired them together and on many of their gadgets it now reads as bake/roast.

Well, I wonder if one day when they add more and more buttons that steam bake and steam roast will be combined.

Is It Better To Air Fry Or Roast In An Air Fryer?

I prefer to just press air fry, as the results are so similar so if you are steaming chicken for example, you could use steam air fry or stick with steam roast.

What Is The Air Fryer Steam Roast Time?

The steam roast cooking time can vary depending on what you are cooking. We find that for a roast that normally has a 1 hour 45 minute oven time, will be done in the Ninja Foodi on steam roast in 45 minutes.

Should The Vent Be Open Or Closed On The Ninja Steam Roast?

You only need to set it sealing (also known as closed) when pressure cooking. This is so that your food can build up pressure. Also when pressure cooking you cant open the lid once it has started to pressure cooker.

The opposite applies when steam roasting. The vent is open and you can open the lid if you like to check on your food.

Ninja Steam Air Fryer Instructions

The way it is different when you have the steam element compared to just air frying is that you need liquid for your steam to be created. So like with pressure cooking, as you add the food you add 240ml/1 cup of liquid (or more) as it depends what you are cooking.

Then of course, just like air frying, you need to set the time and temperature. Then the only other major difference is that you will see PRE SCREEN and this is preheating before it starts cooking.

How Do I Cook A Roast In A Ninja Foodi?

When you cook a roast in a ninja foodi, you will learn its very similar to just air frying. You add the air fryer basket, the poultry/meat you are cooking, put the lid down and set the time and temp and of course which function you are using.

How To Steam Roast In Ninja Foodi?

Its very similar to just roasting in the Ninja Foodi. The only real difference is that you need to add some liquid for the steam element of the recipe.

You can of course if you have the Ninja Foodi Max use the probe and then just set a temperature or do a time and temp and not use the probe.

Here are some examples of cooking a roast in the Ninja Foodi that you can do on steam roast:

Pressure Cooker & Air Fryer Method

In The Complete Multicooker Cookbook we have several recipes dedicated to pressure cooking and then air frying. It works brilliantly because you have fast cooked food and then the texture of air frying. This idea came about when we first got the Ninja Foodi 9 in 1 so perfect if you don’t have the bells and whistles of the 15 in 1 and you want another way to cook your pork etc without a steam roast.

How it works is that you pressure cook to just under done and then finish with air frying. You can see it in action in our pressure cooker roast duck recipe.

Steam & Roast Rack For The Ninja Foodi

If you are wondering what to use when you are doing your steam roast meals in the Ninja Foodi, it’s the standard stainless-steel rack that comes with your Foodi. Or sometimes (depending on what I am cooking) I will just use the air fryer basket.

But what I love the most about the steam and roast rack is that you can flip it over so you can have it high or low depending on what you are cooking. For example, its brilliant low when you are cooking something big that you are wondering if it will fit or not.

Though note: you don’t put the food in the cooking pot directly when you are steam roasting, because you need the liquid for steaming there.
