Ninja Foodi Steak & Kidney Pie
Get ready for the best steak and kidney pie recipe. Made with the Ninja Foodi making use of the different functions. First, we are going to pressure cook the steak and kidney filling and then we are going to use the bake setting for that golden crispy pie crust.

Steak & Kidney Pie
Did your grandma make a comforting steak and kidney pie? Mine did. She would spend her time cooking the delightful steak and kidney filling first, then she would make some pastry and then put it together into a pie.
Then what didn’t fit into the pie would make a lovely steak and kidney stew.
The modern mum in myself would now choose to double batch the steak and kidney stew like filling and then I have a stew for the freezer, make a couple of pies and then freeze an extra pie too. Because unlike my grandma its that crazy modern balance with home cooked food for the kids and working full time.
This steak and kidney pie recipe came about because we had just finished the photographs for our new cookbook THE COMPLETE PRESSURE COOKER COOKBOOK (order it now) and we had done a delicious steak pudding.
I was walking through the supermarket, spotted the fresh kidneys and thought, let’s see how steak and kidney pie will turn out in the Ninja Foodi – so no pre-planning let’s just do this!
Can You Cook A Pie In The Ninja Foodi?
Yes, you can cook a pie in the Ninja Foodi, and you have a few different options and of course can expect amazing results.
Firstly, you can use the Ninja Foodi for your pie filling. You can do this with either pressure cooking or slow cooking to achieve that beautiful tender steak and kidney.
But before that you can also use the sauté, to brown your steak and kidney.
Then for your pie crust, if you just want a pie top then you can place it over the stew like filling and then you are not moving anything and its all happening in one pot. Or your plan B is that you can get your filling out, blind bake a pie crust and then cook the pie on the rack of the Ninja Foodi.
Here is our steak and kidney pie just finished cooking in the Ninja Foodi:

Into a colourful block – I love light blue – and one we can keep and use across our posts – can mix it up with chef dom, sam and dom, tips etc
Sam & Dom Says
We made our steak and kidney pie in the Ninja Foodi because we can do the filling and then we can bake for the pie crust. But you could also slow cook the filling, then air fry, or have a separate instant pot for the filling, then an air fryer for the pie.
The Kitchen Gadget Pie Tin
I often get asked which pie tin, or quiche tin works best for the kitchen gadgets.
Its this one we use in this recipe and in a lot of our recipes. It’s by Masterclass and it is 20cm/8 inch. It’s the perfect size for your pies, quiches and tarts and it also has the perforated bottom making it perfect for getting the bottom of your pie cooked perfectly.
Here it is making our ninja foodi quiche lorraine.

Learn More About Blind Baking
This is one of many recipes here at Kitchen Gadgets Club that uses the method of blind baking. The idea that you are baking the bottom of your pastry, before adding the filling. We shared a full podcast about blind baking last week and we recommend you have a read.
What Is In Steak & Kidney Pie?

A steak and kidney pie has many ingredients that you would expect to see in a classic steak pie. You need steak, kidney, onions, stock, seasonings, as well as the pie crust.
The Steak – You can use any beef that is slow cooking and lends itself to the award of the best steak pie. Think chuck/braising, shin, or brisket. Avoid the likes of topside or silverside as not as slow cooking.
The Kidneys – Ox kidney works best in a steak and kidney pie, but you can also use lamb livers but because they are small you won’t notice them as much in your pie. Also, as a general rule its double the steak to the kidneys.
The Onion – We used one large brown onion and sautéed this first to add flavour to the cooking pot.
The Flavour Jug – We love to add it all to the jug and give it a good mix. Rather than adding an ingredient at a time. Into our flavour jug we had red wine, beef stock, thyme, tomato puree/paste, and Worcestershire sauce.
The Pastry – Homemade shortcrust pastry is of course lovely, but you can of course cheat and use puff pastry as those ready rolled sheets are a dream come true.
Though in our printable recipe card which includes step by step photographs and full measurements you can see a full breakdown of every ingredient featured in this recipe.
Preparing Kidneys For Your Steak Pie
One thing that puts most people off a traditional steak and kidney pie recipe is the need to prepare the kidneys first. They will then skip the kidneys and just make a steak pie.
But the kidneys make the recipe and once you have prepared them once (like with dealing with liver) you can do it again and again.
Soak the kidneys first in cold water with a tablespoon of cold milk. Leave them to soak for about half an hour. Rinse and then use kitchen/paper towel to fully dry before using. Use scissors to get rid of the rubbery fat centre as they can be tough to chop out.

Then they are ready for sauteing in your cooking pot.
How To Make A Steak & Kidney Pie?

Making your own homemade steak and kidney pie is much easier than you think. We are going to split it into two parts of the recipe. The making of your pie filling which of often called a steak & kidney stew. Then we are going to blind bake the pastry and then bring everything together and transform it into a steak and kidney pie.
But wait: If you would like to make a steak and kidney pudding you can make the filling and then follow our steak pudding step by step pictures and cooking times from inside The Complete Pressure Cooker Cookbook.

Ninja Foodi Steak & Kidney Pie
Equipment
Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1 Large Brown Onion
- 900 g /2lbs Diced Beef we used chuck/braising
- 450 g /1lb Ox Kidneys
The Flavour Jug
- 180 ml /0.75 Cup Red Wine
- 240 ml /1 Cup Beef Stock
- 1 Tbsp Dried Thyme
- 1 Tbsp Tomato Puree/Paste
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
After Pressure Cooking
- 2 Tbsp Beef Gravy Granules we used Bisto
- 1 Tbsp Dried Thyme
- 1 Tbsp Dried Parsley
- Salt & Pepper
- 320 g /11.25oz Pack Ready Rolled Puff Pastry
Instructions
- Prepare the kidneys. Soak them in milk for at least 30 minutes and then pat dry with kitchen/paper towels. Then get rid of any fatty bits and the white rubbery core with scissors and chop them into chunks similar in size to your beef stewing meat.

- Drizzle a tablespoon of olive oil into the cooking pot. Press sauté. As it warms up peel and dice the onion. Then cook the onion until it has softened and then set aside.

- Add another tablespoon of olive oil add the chunks of steak and brown on all sides.

- Then also put the steak to one side and rinse and repeat with the kidneys using the last tablespoon of oil and giving them a good browning on each side.

- Add the steak and onion back into the cooking pot, pour in the flavour jug and give it a good stir to get rid of any bits stuck to the bottom of the cooking pot.

- Place the lid on the ninja foodi as your steak and kidney is now ready to be cooked. Set the valve to sealing and pressure cook for 45 minutes followed by a 10-minute delayed release.

- After lifting up the lid add in the gravy granules and seasonings. Making sure you give it a good seasoning of salt and pepper. You shouldn’t need to put it back onto sauté as it will still carry a lot of heat from pressure cooking. Allow it to thicken and then you are ready for making your steak and kidney stew into a pie. Then move to the filling to one side, clean out the cooking pot and its ready for the pie.

- Roll out the pastry to cover the bottom of your pie tin. Then add the baking beans to your pie tin and then add it onto the rack. Lower the rack into the cooking pot. Press bake or air fry and set the temperature to 160c/320f and cook for 30 minutes.

- Carefully remove the rack from the cooking pot and remove the pie tin from the rack. Remove the baking beans and set aside to cool them down. Add in the steak and kidney filling to the pie bottom.

- Top with the remaining pastry, you may need to roll again and you can use your finger and some cold water on your finger to create a wet bit around the edge of the pie. This will help it stick. Use scissors to the centre of the pie to create a hole for your steam to escape.

- Then add the pie back to the rack, the rack into the cooking pot and cook on the same setting and temperature for 25 minutes until golden.

- Then serve with mashed potatoes, peas and gravy.

Can You Taste The Kidneys In Steak & Kidney Pie?
Yes, you can. Keep any fussy teenagers away from the steak and kidney pie if you feel they will hate the taste of the kidneys!
Can You Freeze A Steak Pie?
Yes, you can freeze your steak pie. Make sure it is fully cold before freezing it. If you are freezing multiple pies then we recommend a layer of kitchen/paper towel between each one as it will stop them from sticking together. You can also freeze your steak pie filling too into freezer bags or into freezer cubes. Another option is to freeze any spare unused pastry you have in a dough ball.
What To Have With Steak Pie?
We served our steak pie with pressure cooker mashed potatoes, frozen peas that we had warmed up and lots of beef gravy. You can do similar or another idea is to have some air fryer beef dripping roast potatoes to go with it instead of the mash.
